Wide receiver Tyquan Thornton blew away an impressive position group at the NFL Combine with a record-setting 40-yard-dash time.

The wide receiver class for the 2022 NFL Draft is loaded with potential stars. Guys like Chris Olave, Treylon Burks, Garrett Wilson, Drake London and many more have a ton of fans.

At the NFL Combine on Thursday, though, as the wide receivers ran the 40-yard dash, it was someone unexpected that really got a buzz going throughout Lucas Oil Stadium.

Baylor wide receiver Tyquan Thornton, who came up after the aforementioned Olave ran a blazing 4.26-second time in the 40, put the rest of his peers in the dust as he blazed to an unofficial record time.

Tyquan Thornton 40-yard dash: How fast did he run?

According to the unofficial timing at the NFL Combine, Thornton ran the 40-yard dash in 4.21 seconds. Olave was the second-fastest time of the day at the time mentioned, but Thornton bested that (again, unofficially) by a full 0.05 seconds, which is substantial in this type of drill and test.

Update: The official times came out and Thornton did not, in fact, break the record. Instead, he still ran a blazing 4.28-second time, but fell short of the record.

NFL Combine record 40 time: What is John Ross’ record?

The record that’s still intact was previously set by John Ross, a wide receiver who came out of Washington and was eventually drafted in the first round by the Cincinnati Bengals, who set the mark by running the 40 in 4.22 seconds.

Tyquan Thornton: Who is the NFL Combine record-setter?

As mentioned, Thornton is a wide receiver out of Baylor who does have some appeal as a mid-to-late round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

He put up his best season with the Bears in 2021 as he caught 62 passes for 948 yards and 10 touchdowns. All told, he finished his career with 2,242 receiving yards on 143 catches with 19 total touchdowns.

After putting up a 40 time like that, though, we’re definitely about to hear a lot more about Thornton.
