Trust in Spencer Shrader, Seth McGowan ‘runs…

2. Spencer Shrader’s two missed field goals didn’t diminish the Colts’ confidence in him.

This is an admittedly small sample size, but entering Week 7, Shrader had made 36 of 37 field goals – good for a rate of 97.3 percent, the highest in NFL history for a kicker with at least 37 field goal attempts.

Only three kickers have attempted at least 40 field goals and made 90 percent or more of them entering Week 7: the Chargers’ Cameron Dicker (92.6 percent, 149 attempts), the Vikings’ Will Reichard (90 percent, 80 attempts) and the Browns’ Andre Syzmt (90 percent, 40 attempts).

Shrader made his first field goal of Sunday’s game and then missed from 56 and 48 yards. He’s now 37 of 40 (92.5 percent) in his career.

So, no, the Colts aren’t taking Shrader’s first career game with multiple missed field goals – and his first missed field goal since last September – as a reason to lose trust in their kicker.

“I got a ton of confidence in Spence,” Steichen said. “He’s been money all year. And today wasn’t his day, and that happens in the National Football League. Some guys have off days, but I got a ton of confidence in Spence moving forward.”

Shrader said he didn’t do a good enough job following his routine prior to missing from 56 yards, and then said he “wasn’t able to follow my routine” prior to the 48-yard miss, which pushed wide right.

“Obviously a really difficult game,” Shrader said. “Feel very embarrassed, feel very responsible for the team’s loss, but also thankful for these guys and the support, and just loving on me afterwards and knowing that I have a big role on this team. I want to be there for them. This is going to sting, this is going to hurt, but the only thing that I can do is get back to work this coming week and figure out how I can get better.”
