The Second-Longest Punt in NFL History?

The 2021 Official National Football League Record & Fact Book lists the three longest punts in NFL history. The longest is a 98-yarder by the Jets’ Steve O’Neal from 1969 and can easily be found on YouTube. The third-longest is a 93-yarder by the Patriots’ Shawn McCarthy. It, too, can easily be found on YouTube. The second-longest is credited to the Chicago Bears’ Joe Lintzenich from a 1931 game against the New York Giants. It cannot easily be found on YouTube.

Jeremy Snyder, who’s the person behind the old DVOA transcription project, has a fascinating article at his site Quirky Research about Lintzenich’s kick and how it made its way into the NFL record book in the 1970’s. Was it really 94 yards measured from the line of scrimmage the way O’Neal’s and McCarthy’s and every modern punt are? Or was it Lintzenich’s famous broadcaster son-in-law taking a family connection and getting it into the record book based on thin evidence from the days before modern record-keeping was a thing?
