The Jets opened up free agency on Monday with an addition to the offensive line and a subtraction from the defensive line.

The team agreed to a deal with guard Laken Tomlinson, according to sources, on Monday when the free agency negotiating window opened. The two sides agreed to a three-year, $40 million contract with $27 million guaranteed, according to a source. It has a maximum value of $41.2 million with incentives. The deal cannot become official until 4 p.m. on Wednesday when the new league year begins.

While the Jets added Tomlinson, they lost defensive tackle Folorunso Fatukasi. The 2018 sixth-round pick agreed to a three-year, $30 million contract with $20 million guaranteed with the Jaguars, according to a source. The Jets hoped to retain Fatukasi but were not willing to pay him $10 million a year. Jacksonville did, and now Jets general manager Joe Douglas has a hole on the defensive line to fill.

Tomlinson, 30, gives the Jets an immediate upgrade at guard. He knows the system from the last five years with the 49ers. Jets coach Robert Saleh, offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur, and offensive line coach John Benton all know Tomlinson from their time in San Francisco.

The only question now is whether Tomlinson will play at right guard, where the Jets have a hole, or left guard, where he has played most of his career. If he stays at left guard, that means Alijah Vera-Tucker would move to right guard for his second season.

The move also affects the Jets’ draft plans, as it now seems unlikely they would draft a tackle or guard early in this year’s draft. The Jets could still be looking for an upgrade at center but seem pretty set for starters with Vera-Tucker and Tomlinson at guard and Mekhi Becton and George Fant at tackle.
