Colts Trading Wentz to Washington

NFL Offseason – In 2016, the Eagles traded five draft picks, including two first-rounders, for the second overall draft pick, which they used to select Carson Wentz. In 2021, the Colts traded two picks, one of which turned out to be a first-rounder, for Wentz. Today, the Washington Commanders traded two picks, believed to be a pair of third-rounders, to make Wentz their guy. 

Wentz finished 17th in both DYAR and DVOA last season, a nice rebound from his disastrous 2020. But his Indianapolis tenure ended with an embarrassing loss to Jacksonville, the worst team in the league, when a win would have clinched a playoff berth. The Colts made it pretty clear at the combine that Wentz had played his last game in an Indianapolis uniform, and now that’s official (or it will be when the new league year officially begins later this month). Wentz is Washington’s problem now—they will be paying his entire $28 million salary in 2022.

UPDATE: Full terms of the trade are now available. The teams will also be swapping second-round picks this year, with Indianapolis moving up from 47 to 42, and likely gaining another second-rounder in 2023.
