Impending free agent safety Tyrann Mathieu revealed at the NFL Honors that he wants to remain with the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Kansas City Chiefs fell just short of reaching Super Bowl LVI, as they lost 27-24 in overtime to the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Championship Game. Now, they will have to focus on their cap space and which free agents to sign. They have one in-house candidate in star safety Tyrann Mathieu, who could have plenty of suitors at the start of the new league year.

Mathieu was interviewed by the NFL Network at the 2022 NFL Honors and was asked about what he hopes happens in free agency this offseason. The safety revealed that “the hope and the dream is to remain a Kansas City Chief.”

That is obviously welcome news for Chiefs fans. Now, the team has to find a way to sign him.

According to Spotrac, the Chiefs only have over $3 million in cap space entering the 2022 league year as of this writing. The website calculates that his annual salary could come in at $14.8 million per season. To bring Mathieu back, they will have to restructure some current contracts on the books or outright release players.

This season, Mathieu recorded 76 total tackles, six passes defended, three interceptions, one defensive touchdown and one sack. In his three seasons in Kansas City, Mathieu posted 213 combined tackles, 27 passes defended, 13 interceptions and four fumble recoveries.

Mathieu says he wants to be a Kansas City Chief, but whether the two sides will agree on a deal this offseason remains to be seen.
