One day after Pro Football Focus listed New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning as one of the worst starters in all of football, ESPN doubled down in their preseason hot seat power rankings.

While scanning the league, writers at ESPN ultimately determined that Manning’s hot seat is hotter than everyone not named Josh Rosen.

31. New York Giants

Who’s on the hot seat: Eli Manning, QB

Why his seat is warm: He’s 38 years old, in the final year of his contract and his successor is already on the roster. If Manning wants to even make it through this season as the starter, he’s going to have to produce at an extremely high level — with a lot of victories. He hasn’t been able to do that for several years. The pressure is on more than ever, with those two Super Bowls further in the distance and his football mortality in question. — Jordan Raanan

Unlike the typical “Manning stinks because that’s what everyone says” nonsense, this assessment hits the nail right on the head — something even the most staunch Manning supporters can’t deny.

Manning’s career clock is ticking and even he has to recognize it’s nearing the end. The Giants have a young successor who has looked impressive this summer and should Manning struggle early in the season, the plug is likely to be pulled.

Ideally, Manning’s Giants career won’t come to such an unceremonious end, but there’s no denying it’s potentially in the cards.
