Let’s dive into my favorite WR starts and sits for Week 2 using Wide Receiver Fantasy Points Scored Slot vs. Wide and our Defense Slot vs. Wide. Starts
- Player: Rome Odunze
- Opponent: vs. Vikings
Minnesota allowed an astounding 50 fantasy points to wide receivers lined up outside, the most in the NFL in Week 1. Christian Watson accounted for a huge chunk of that damage, scoring 32.7 fantasy points while doing all of his damage from the outside, finishing as the WR2 overall. Odunze is coming off a preseason calf injury but showed he’s ready to roll, hauling in a 47-yard catch against Carolina. He led the Bears by lining up out wide on 73.9% of his snaps in Week 1. With Minnesota’s outside coverage already showing some vulnerability, expect Odunze to make some noise in Week 2.
- Player: Malik Nabers
- Opponent: at Los Angeles Rams
The Giants will need to keep pace with the Rams, which should force Nabers to be heavily involved on Monday Night Football. Fortunately for Nabers, Los Angeles was one of eight teams to allow 30-plus fantasy points to receivers lined up out wide in Week 1. Nabers lined up outside on 82% of his snaps against Dallas, putting him in the right position to take advantage of this matchup. Mike Evans finished as the WR14 against the Rams last week. Why can’t Nabers push for a top-10 finish on Monday night?
WR3 Starts (WRs ranked outside the top 25)
- Player: Chris Godwin
- Opponent: vs. Browns
Parker Washington and Jakobi Meyers each scored 10 fantasy points from the slot against Cleveland in Week 1. That’s encouraging news for Godwin, who lined up in the slot on 81% of his snaps against Cincinnati. After a relatively quiet Week 1, I’m expecting a bounce-back performance from the veteran wide receiver at Raymond James Stadium in a favorable matchup. Fire up the cannons!
- Player: Adonai Mitchell
- Opponent: vs. Packers
Green Bay allowed the ninth-most fantasy points to wide receivers lined up outside in Week 1 against Minnesota and Carson Wentz, giving Mitchell an intriguing matchup. The Packers also have several defensive players dealing with injuries, making the Jets’ passing attack a sneaky option. Mitchell did all of his damage outside in Week 1, hauling in a 40-yard reception that was the Jets’ longest play of the game. His connection with Geno Smith will be needed against a Packers offense capable of scoring in bunches. With Mitchell working primarily outside, he’s a WR3 with big-play upside.

- Player: Carnell Tate
- Opponent: vs. Eagles
The Titans’ offense wasn’t exactly lighting up the scoreboard in Week 1, and after an underwhelming 38-yard performance, it’s difficult to have much confidence in Tate against Philadelphia. The Eagles allowed 82% of their opposing WR fantasy points to come from the slot in Week 1, with Stefon Diggs and Antonio Williams doing most of the damage. That’s worth noting because Tate’s teammate, Wan’Dale Robinson, is the Titans’ primary slot weapon and lined up there on 80% of his snaps in Week 1. Tate didn’t score a single fantasy point from the slot despite lining up there roughly one-third of the time against the Jets. His matchup is considerably tougher this week.
- Player: Jaylen Waddle
- Opponent: at Jacksonville
Jacksonville limited Cleveland’s wide receivers to fewer than 10 fantasy points from the slot in Week 1, which doesn’t bode well for Waddle. After joining Denver, Waddle lined up in the slot on 65.5% of his snaps in Week 1, putting him directly into the area where Jacksonville showed the most resistance. We also saw Courtland Sutton find success against the Jaguars last season, scoring a touchdown and leading Denver in receiving yards in Week 16 while lining up out wide on 81.3% of his snaps. Waddle’s heavy slot usage creates a tougher path to production in this matchup, making him a player I’m willing to sit in favor of higher-upside options this week.
